Sustainable custom cabinets: where quality meets environmental responsibility

At Maatkasten Online, we create custom cabinets that perfectly fit your interior. But behind every cabinet is a production process, a choice of materials, and a delivery . And we try to handle all of that consciously. Not with one major overhaul, but with a series of carefully considered choices that truly make a difference.

From wood from sustainably managed forests to circular materials, from solar panels to efficient transport: below you can read about the steps we are taking to produce more sustainably .

1) Wood from sustainably managed forests 🌲

Because every closet starts in the forest 😉

A sustainable custom cabinet starts with high-quality wood. That's why we choose wood from sustainably managed forests. TThis means forests that are replanted and managed with respect for nature and biodiversity. We want to create cabinets that last. And that starts with resources that are sourced responsibly.

2) Circular economy and sustainable materials ♻️

Waste? We mainly see new opportunities!

Sustainability isn't just about what you use, but also about what you reuse. At Maatkasten Online, we strongly believe in a circular economy, where materials remain in the supply chain for as long as possible . We achieve this through our choice of materials and by converting our residual products.

More about our sustainable materials

  • Panels from reclaimed wood

We consciously choose sustainable solutions for our materials. For example, we use board material made from flax shives: a residual product from the textile industry that would otherwise end up in landfills. By reusing this reclaimed raw material, the material is given a second life in our custom cabinets.

  • Converting waste flows into new products with Unilin

We also collaborate with Unilin to reprocess waste streams into new products. Wood residues from our production are collected and delivered back to Unilin, which in turn uses them to make new materials, for example by converting them into new This prevents waste and keeps valuable material in circulation.

3) Quality and long life as a sustainable choice 🪵

Perhaps most importantly: we make cabinets that last . You don't replace a custom cabinet every few years. By choosing durable materials, high-quality finishes and timeless design, we help break the fast-consumption pattern. Less replacement. Less waste. More years of use and enjoyment.

4) Solar panels on our production site in Maldegem ☀️

Our energy is through the roof. Literally 😄

Our production site in Maldegem is equipped with solar panels. This allows us to generate some of our own energy and reduce our ecological footprint. This step aligns perfectly with our vision: producing locally, as sustainably as possible.

5) Less packaging and less waste 📦

Because nobody likes a mountain of cardboard.

We use minimal packaging when we deliver. No unnecessary layers of cardboard or plastic, just what's necessary to transport your custom wardrobe safely. This reduces waste in your home and reduces waste overall.

6) Sustainable transport and efficient deliveries 🚛

We prefer to drive smart rather than often

Transport also plays a key role in sustainability. That's why we plan our deliveries as efficiently as possible . We combine deliveries where possible and group trips by region . This limits unnecessary kilometers, saves fuel, and reduces emissions.

Frequently asked questions about sustainable cabinets

  • What makes a custom cabinet sustainable?

A customised cupboard is sustainable when it lasts a long time, is made from responsible materials and is produced with attention to energy consumption, transport and waste streams. That is exactly what we focus on at Maatkasten Online.

  • Are panels made of flax shives strong enough?

Yes. Panel material made from recycled raw materials like flax shives is developed to be high-quality and sustainable, making it perfectly suited for custom cabinets.

  • Why is a custom-made wardrobe more sustainable than a standard wardrobe?

A custom-made cabinet is made to measure, meaning less waste and a solution that lasts for years. This often makes it more sustainable than furniture that gets replaced more quickly.

  • What happens to the residual material during the production of a custom cabinet?

During production, there's always residual material. In collaboration with Unilin, we ensure that wood waste can be reprocessed into new chipboard. This gives the material a second life and minimizes waste.

  • How does the circular economy contribute to sustainability?

The circular economy revolves around the reuse and recycling of materials. By reprocessing residual flows into new raw materials, waste is reduced and fewer new raw materials are needed.

  • Are the custom cabinets produced locally?

Yes. Our custom cabinets are produced at local production sites. Local production not only means short lines and quality control, but also less long-distance transport. And that's a bonus.

  • How long does a custom wardrobe last on average?

A custom-made wardrobe is designed to last for years. Thanks to strong materials, a solid finish, and customization that perfectly fits your home, it's an investment you'll enjoy for years to come. How long exactly depends on how you use it, of course, but the bottom line is always: made to last.

  • Is a custom wardrobe a sustainable investment?

A custom-made wardrobe is not only practical and beautiful, but also a smart long-term investment. Because it's custom-made and durable, you avoid having to buy or replace items quickly. Sometimes, sustainability simply comes down to one word: durable.
